Green Ostrich Tip – Look for chemicals in your family’s clothing

Green Ostrich Tip of the Week

Green Ostrich offers occasional suggestions on how to go green in the home, office and school. This week’s tip is for the home.

It barely makes sense, look for chemicals in your clothing, why would there be chemicals in my plain cotton, wool or hemp clothing? The answer may lie in your children’s pajamas. Often pajamas have added flame-retardant chemicals such as halogenated hydrocarbons or phosphate based compounds. These chemicals are against your child’s skin all night long, slowly seeping into their skin. Select your children’s pajamas carefully and read all labels.

Get Green with Reusable Sandwich Bags

One of the easiest, and frankly, trendiest ways to go green is by switching to Reusable Sandwich Bags. These bags are made of thick European cotton and have a thick strand of velcro to keep items snug inside. The bags are also dishwasher safe.

Green Ostrich is currently running a special on these bags and you can get a great starter set. When you purchase four bags you get the fifth one for free.  Basically it’s five bags for the price of four. You can also pick from fun designs such as sharks, apples, flowers and circuits. There are also different sizes to pick from. The sandwich size is ideal for a two slice of bread type sandwich while bigger heros and subs will fit better in the submarine size reusable bag. There is a also a snack size for your pretzels, carrots, etc!

Green Ostrich Tip – Offsetting should not be off-putting

Green Ostrich Tip of the Week

Green Ostrich offers occasional suggestions on how to go green in the home, office and school. This week’s tip is for the home.

You don’t need to be a die-hard environmentalist to consider offsetting your carbon footprint.   The desire to neutralize your mark on mother nature or your “footprint” is natural once you start educating yourself on the impact we each make on Mother Earth.

To offset the carbon dioxide your home releases, consider funding an eco-friendly activity.  Sites such as Terrapass.com or Carbonfund.org both specialize in this and can offer your the ability to calculate your foot print and purchasing offsets.

Green Ostrich Tip – Drive the Speed Limit

Green Ostrich Tip of the Week

Green Ostrich offers occasional suggestions on how to go green in the home, office and school. This week’s tip is for traveling between the home, office and school.

Did you know that cars in the United States reach their fuel efficiency around 55 miles per hour? Did you also know that this fuel efficiency drops off quickly above that limit? Therefore the difference between 65 and 60 miles an hour will simultaneously save you fuel and therefore money, lower your carbon footprint and keep you safer (studies suggest that driving slower reduces your chance of accidents). Start driving slower today!

Green Ostrich Tip – Install Storm Doors

Green Ostrich Tip of the Week

Green Ostrich offers occasional suggestions on how to go green in the home, office and school. This week’s tip is for the home.

Our last tip was to switch your single-pane windows to thicker, double-pane, energy-efficient windows. Basically this tip adds another barrier between you and the weather outside.

This week’s tip is similar. It’s all about adding another layer between you and the outdoors. But this time it is on your doors. Consider adding a storm door at all entrances. This fairly inexpensive change could increase your energy efficiency by 45%.

Green Ostrich Tip – Expensive but worth it – Double Panes

Green Ostrich Tip of the Week

Green Ostrich offers occasional suggestions on how to go green in the home, office and school. This week’s tip is for all three.

Every window you see – in your home, office or school – consider switching it to the double pane variety. Replacing outdated, single-pane windows with their energy-efficient double-pane counterparts can reduce your heating costs significantly.  Some even say you can cut your energy bill by a third with this tip. While costly initially, this change pays for itself in just a couple of years.
